Buddhist music, often referred to as "Buddhist melodies," serves as a channel to elucidate Buddhist teachings and inspire spiritual awakening. It is a profound musical genre that radiates serenity and compassion, stirring the hearts of listeners with a sense of joy and virtuous intent. In the vast garden of music, Buddhist melodies bloom like pure lotus flowers, showcasing their transcendental beauty. They can be categorized into "mantras," "ritual music," and "Zen music" for meditation and enlightenment.

The origins of Buddhist music can be traced back to the ancient "Yushan Fabei" in Shandong, China. Yushan Fabei, composed during the Wei Dynasty (230 AD), marked the inception of "Praises to the Buddha" (now known as "Bathing Buddha Hymn") and "Shen Song." These compositions brought about a remarkable transformation in musical style, enriching the tradition of Chinese Buddhism. The "Yushan Fabei" or simply "Fabei" was widely practiced during the Qi and Liang Dynasties and continued to flourish during the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

During the Tang Dynasty (804-850), eminent monks like Kukai and Gennin introduced Fabei to Japan, known as "Yushan Shengming," and to Korea, known as "Yushan." Throughout history, Cao Zhi has been revered as the founder of Buddhist music and the originator of Fabei. Yushan has become synonymous with the "forest style" of Chinese Buddhist Fabei.

The cultural significance of Buddhist music was officially recognized when it was included in China's first national intangible cultural heritage list on May 20, 2006, as part of Wutai Mountain's Buddhist music tradition.

Subsequently, on June 7, 2008, Buddhist music, including Yushan Fabei, was included in the second batch of China's national intangible cultural heritage list.
