This is a raw Blu-Ray rip of the 2021 Discotek release of Memories (1995), dir. Katsuhiro Otomo.
This release is significant because, as anyone familiar with Discotek media should be aware, they put a ridiculous amount of effort into their releases. This release contains many more features compared to the earlier 2007 Japan-only Blu-Ray, such as:
-A brand new film scan and restoration (Looks better than the 2007 to my eyes)
-Newly translated subtitles (Apparently the original subs could be traced back to a rush job made for a film festival)
-An English dub (Actually pretty good)
-Behind the scenes special featurettes
There is a bit of weirdness I must mention. The first short, Magnetic Rose, had some restoration work done with AstroRez to fix some issues relating to some sort of composite video source that was used during editing. (One of the special features goes over this in more detail.) Thankfully DiscoTek gives you the option to switch between both the restored and original versions, so it’s a matter of preference. However this means that’s there a video file for both versions. There’s also two different files for each of the credits, one of the original Japanese and a new one that’s been translated into English and adds all the credit for the dub and restoration work.
I’m sure whoever’s remuxing this is smart enough to figure it out though 🙂
The main film portions includes both a 5.1 and stereo mix for both the English and Japanese versions, along with forced subs for the dub and full subs for the original audio.
